Mario has recently enjoyed his 35th anniversary, celebrating with a vast range of promotional goods and new games. Since then, Sega and Nintendo have gone down different lanes as game companies, but Mario and Sonic remain as two of the most iconic and relevant characters in gaming to this day.
In 1991, Sonic the Hedgehog launched on the Sega Genesis, giving the Japanese company a mascot to hold up and use to compete with compatriot Nintendo's Mario.
